The Anchor of Hope for the Souls of Men

[ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Sarah Slywka attends Glen Elm with her husband, Jonathan. She is a grade five teacher by day, and a curler by night.]

Hope.

It is a simple word – a word used frequently in Christian circles of people. But let us consider how often we use the word without truly comprehending the reason for the hope we have? How often do we tell others to have hope and claim to have hope ourselves, when we continue on in busy lives bearing anxiety, worry, fear, and stress? Yes, there are many burdens and challenges that life will bring, as sin is real and brokenness is present in the world. However, let us not allow burdens and challenges to restrict our hearts from grasping on to the hope Jesus offers to us by dying on the cross. His death and resurrection offer us freedom from sin, and hope of eternal life. We have hope knowing the infinite God loves us and has saved us!

“In HIS name the NATIONS will put their hope.” (Matthew 12:21).

Therefore, let us live in such a way that proclaims the hope we have, so that others may see it. Let us hold on to His promise, as “we have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19). Our God has come for all nations, and through Him we can fulfill His mission and share His hope with others.

Recently, my very thoughtful sister in law mailed me a CD with this song on it. I love the illustration of God the lyrics create. In a stretch of time where my life has been bogged by busyness, I have found great encouragement and perspective in this song’s message. May it be uplifting to you today as well.

Marvelous, wonderful, infinite God

Author of all that is good

Faithful provider and giver of life

Source of all power and love

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise

Refuge of strength to the end

Righteous redeemer and mighty to save

He’s the Anchor of Hope for the souls of men

Gracious, compassionate, merciful God

Radiant, holy delight

Beautiful Father, victorious Son

Source of unchangeable light

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise

Refuge of strength to the end

Righteous redeemer and mighty to save

He’s the Anchor of Hope for the souls of men

You are light in the dark

You are healing for the broken heart

You are hope, you are Lord,

You are life, you are love that endures

Powerful, constant, unwavering God

Shepherd who comes for the lost

Rock of salvation, remarkable love

Savior who died on the Cross

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise

Refuge of strength to the end

Righteous redeemer and mighty to save

He’s the Anchor of Hope for the souls of men
